1933 Italy - Kingdom, Air Mail, no. 51I / 52I - Long Triptychs - MNH ** 1933 North Atlantic Air Cruise 1. July 12 August 1933. The Decennial Air Cruise, or North Atlantic Cruise, or "North Atlantic Air Cruise", also known as the "Italy-North America", "Orbetello-Chicago-New York-Rome" or "II Atlantic Cruise", it was the second and last mass transatlantic air cruise that took place between 1 July and 12 August 1933. It was organized by Italo Balbo in the first ten years of the Regia Aeronautica and as a propaganda occasion for the Century of Progress, the universal exhibition that was held in Chicago for the centenary of the founding of the city. 25 SIAI-Marchetti S.55X seaplanes took part, organized in 8 squadrons. On board 52 pilot officers, 1 engineer officer and 62 specialist non-commissioned officers. They returned to Italy in 24 aircraft, one having been lost in the tragic accident in the Azores (Bay of Horta).
